Unit Cell
- Unit cell is the smallest unit or three-dimensional portion of the space lattice which when repeated over and over again in different directions gives rise to the complete space lattice.
- It is the smallest geometrical figure having all the properties of a crystal in a crystal lattice.
- Any crystal may have infinite number of unit cells.
- It is characterized by a, b, c (edge distance) and α, β, γ, (angles).

Unit cells are of four types, viz., simple, face-centred,
body-centred and end-centred.

Simple or primitive or basic unit cell
Face-centred Unit Cell
Here lattice points or particles are present not only at corners but also at the centre of each face.
